United States Currency
Sacagawea Dollars
Native American Coins honor and recognize the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development and history of the United States. The U.S. Mint is proud to offer the Native American Coin Program with changing reverse designs each year and a common obverse design featuring Sacagawea.
Native American Coins have a distinctive edge and are golden in color. Each coin’s reverse design and its order of release are determined by the Secretary of the Treasury after consulting with the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, the Congressional Native American Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Congress of American Indians, and after public review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

In 2009, the U.S. Mint began minting and issuing coins as part of the Native American Coin Program authorized by the Native American One Dollar Coin Act (Public Law 110-82).
The obverse (heads side) design retains the central figure of the "Sacagawea" design first produced in 2000 with the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The reverse (tails) design changes each year to honor an important contribution of Indian tribes or individual Native Americans with the inscriptions "" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
